Broadway in Austin has announced their latest season, and it’s one of their best in ages. This season brings to Austin the Best Musical winners at both the 2023 and 2024, as well as a cavalcade of favorites both old new, including the return of two major hits from the last few seasons. Here’s a rundown of each show of this amazing season:

Kimberly Akimbo (September 30 – October 5th, 2025)
Perhaps my most anticipated of the season, this Five-Time Tony winner (including Best Musical) from the brilliant mind of David Lindsay-Abaire tells the tale of a very unique teenager with a rare genetic disease, and her struggles to belong as an eternal outsider in suburban New Jersey. Don’t let the dour description fool you, as Kimberly Akimbo features some of the most toe-tapping numbers on Broadway in recent years, featuring a score by Fun Home’s Jeanine Tesori. It’s hopeful, heart-breaking, and howlingly funny in equal measure, and it’s one you will not want to miss.

The Outsiders (October 21-26, 2025)
Hinson’s celebrated novel is given gorgeous life by award-winning writers Justin Levine and Adam Rapp, with music by folk duo Jamestown Revival. Telling the story of a family of Greasers and their battles against the affluent Socs, it’s a classic story elevated even further by an award-winning cast and crew, winning four Tony 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Direction.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (December 2-14, 2025)
The cornerstone of many a person’s childhood, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast tells the tale we know so well, and brings it to sumptuous life live on stage. Featuring all the songs we love, along with gorgeous choreography and lively staging, this will be one the entire family will love.

Sound of Music (February 3-8, 2026)
Speaking of family favorites, 2026 begins with one of the most well-loved musicals of all time with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. In its 65-year history, this show has brought smiles and tears to people around the world, and now Austinites will get their chance to see it live. Just try to get “My Favorite Things” or “Edelweiss” out of your head after this one.

The Great Gatsby (March 10-15, 2026)
Another literary masterwork gets the musical treatment in The Great Gatsby, as this tale of Nick Harraway, his lover Daisy, and the alluring, mysterious Jay Gatsby gets a jazz-infused invigoration in this Tony-award-winning musical from the minds behind Little Women, The Mad Ones, and Beautiful: the Carole King Musical.

The Wiz (May 12-17, 2026)
This stone-cold classic by the late great Quincy Jones comes to Austin stages, featuring the Wizard of Oz story you loved infused with the toe-tapping tunes by one of music’s greatest talents. If you have magical memories of the original film, starring talents like Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, you’ll surely find that same whimsy in its live iteration.

& Juliet (July 14-19, 2026)
What if the classic story of Romeo & Juliet didn’t have to end in tragedy? That’s the question asked in the jukebox Broadway smash & Juliet, a uniquely fun coming-of-age story featuring the music of famed songwriter Max Martin, including tunes by Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, and more. A refreshingly modern twist of the Shakespearean work, this show was a hot ticket on Broadway that’s sure to bring a smile to local audiences.

Mamma Mia (April 14-19, 2026)
Speaking of jukebox musicals, this season also includes one of the most popular of the genre in Broadway mainstay, Mamma Mia. This Abba-infused story of a trio of would-be feathers coming together for their daughter’s wedding in sun-drenched Greece is beloved by generations, and now’s your chance to experience the toe-tapping show on Austin stages.

All this, plus the return of both Hadestown and Six, makes this the most exciting season in ages, and I for one can’t wait to explore all of these works.
